Hi, I was wondering………………. is it possible to consecrate a circle with a psalm?
Hi Alan I felt sure it should be possible, but finally found something that I think substantiates it. It is in Of Occult Philosophy, or Of Magical Ceremonies: The Fourth Book. Written by Henry Cornelius Agrippa. Translated into English by Robert Turner. London. 1655.
These are a couple of excerpts that I think will alude your the answer.
“And now we come to treat of the Consecrations which, men ought to make upon all instruments and things necessary to be used in this Art: and the vertue of this Consecration most chiefly consists in two things; to wit, in the power of the person consecrating, and by the vertue of the prayer by which the Consecration is made. For in the person consecrating, there is required holiness of Life, and power of sanctifying: both which are acquired by Dignification and Initiation. And that the person himself should with a firm and undoubted faith believe the vertue, power, and efficacie hereof. And then in the Prayer it self by which this Consecration is made, there is required the like holiness; which either solely consisteth in the prayer it self, as, if it be by divine inspiration ordained to this purpose, such as we have in many places of the holy Bible; or that it be hereunto instituted through the power of the Holy Spirit, in the ordination of the Church. Otherwise there is in the Prayer a Sanctimony, which is not onely by it self, but by the commemoration of holy things; as, the commemoration of holy Scriptures, Histories, Works, Miracles, Effects, Graces, Promises, Sacraments and Sacramental things, and the like. Which things, by a certain similitude, do seem properly or improperly to appertain to the thing consecrated. Therefore when you would consecrate any Place or Circle, you ought to take the prayer of Solomon used in the dedication of the Temple [2-Chron. 6.14]: and moreover, you must bless the place with the sprinkling of Holy-water, “
If you can consecrate with a prayer, then why not a psalm. You would probably want to reinforce the consecration by sprinkling water within the circle. There are many references to saying a prayer while you are in the circle. A prayer or a sacred song should both accomplish the same thing. This is another reference that I found for you CIRCLE: Sacred space wherein all magick is to be worked and all ritual contained. It both holds ritual energy until the witch is ready to release it, and provides protection for the witch. You also need to understand the basic structure of rituals. Casting circles, calling quarters, invoking the Goddess and God, raising and directing energy, grounding and centering and closing the circle.” In many cases, the people themselves form the circle and are the circle, and they are “invoking God and/or the Goddess” when they stand to form it. But the circle is where the spirit passing himself off as the Holy Spirit manifests in bringing about the consciousness on spiritual unity.
