Is Witchcraft a dogmatic religion?

Dear Rose, Merry Meet! My partner Jerry purchased your Witchraft Home Academy several months ago. We don’t yet live together but hope he’ll soon share it with me. I’m sure it’s very hard to part with even for a while! :-) My Question for Today: Numerology: My birthdate makes my core number 8, yet I feel that 7 reflects my personality more accurately. Likewise, Jerry comes out a 4 which is not at all his personality. Many things in Magick are stated almost with dogmatic certainty, yet I find that the reality doesn’t match the ‘dogma’ (If you are a number X, you are like this). How are we to understand this? Similarly, Voids of the Moon are said to be times of ‘spaciness’ and bad for starting new endeavours. I have observed these now for some months and find I feel no difference in myself during Voids of the Moon. Certain elements, herbs, signs, days, core numbers, etc, are all associated with certain planets, colours, etc. Where does all this come from? It troubles me that Magick seems to have a lot which is stated as if dogmatic and ‘is so, just because’ (no explanations as to why) which doesn’t differ much from the ‘revealed religions’ I am trying to get away from. How can all these things be influenced by a given planet and who decided that they were and when? Please forgive me being so wordy here. I need reassurance that Magick is true and not just a blind faith path like many religions are. Sincere thanks, Rose, for your help with this. Peace & Light, Gary

Merry Meet Gary,

Your questions are most welcome and touch a couple of very important topics!

Question 1: Numerology

“My birthdate makes my core number 8, yet I feel that 7 reflects my personality more accurately. Likewise, Jerry comes out a 4 which is not at all his personality.”

Numbers based on date of birth will reflect you as at the moment of your first breath. From that moment onwards, your personality is shaped by both external (society, parents, religion) and internal factors (choices, spiritual growth).

Question 2: Voids of the Moon

“Similarly, Voids of the Moon are said to be times of ‘spaciness’ and bad for starting new endeavours. I have observed these now for some months and find I feel no difference in myself during Voids of the Moon.”

This is a rule of thumb, Gary. Most people experience it in this way, but there is no reason for you to experience it differently. Having said this, you may find that as you start working with the Moon energies more intensely, the Void of Moon times could start impacting you too. Simply keep an open mind on this for now. Astrologically this time is not the greatest for new endeavours. If however the endeavour is supported by other planetary influences at that point in time, there is no reason not to proceed. In example, if you are a lawyer and Jupiter is well aspected, take on that new case!

Question 3: Correspondences

“Certain elements, herbs, signs, days, core numbers, etc, are all associated with certain planets, colours, etc. Where does all this come from?”

Lore and tradition in many instances dictate these. Colours, Herbs and Crystals are the exception here. Everything vibrates at a specific frequency. The frequency dictates whether it will support or oppose a cause, petition, spell etc. Here comes the dilemma – you vibrate too. So the trick is finding colours, herbs and crystals that vibrate well with you too! This is not too hard. Your own six senses will do this for you!

Question 4: Dogmatism

“It troubles me that Magick seems to have a lot which is stated as if dogmatic and ‘is so, just because’ (no explanations as to why) which doesn’t differ much from the ‘revealed religions’ I am trying to get away from. How can all these things be influenced by a given planet and who decided that they were and when? Please forgive me being so wordy here. I need reassurance that Magick is true and not just a blind faith path like many religions are.”

Magick … when training apprentices in the Craft, you want them to succeed. For this reason you provide them with every last little bit of reinforcement they can possibly need to make their spells work and to keep them safe from harm. It is really good to know all these special correspondences and so forth in the beginning BUT when you progress, you will find that you may start developing your own system based on the best teaching of all – experience!

Also do bear in mind that many people seek structure. That is why there are specific traditions in the Craft. You appear to have less of a need for structure, so you could well end up following an eclectic path. This means that you will assimilate those things that ‘work’ for you into your belief system.  That is perfectly okay. All of us have our own spiritual path to follow at the end of the day. Ultimately, the destination is the same.

To conclude

There are no absolutes in the Universe … except that you need to protect yourself during ritual and that energy released boomerangs.

You are doing the right thing …question and test ALL THE TIME.  Only retain that which works for you as an individual. That is the true way of a Witch.

I sincerely hope that this answers your questions!

Blessed Be!
