I read online that the first spell you cast is the hardest, and then everything after that is considerably easier. What would be a good, simple first spell?

The first spell that most people do is one to protect ourselves and our family. It is a very easy one to do, don’t worry. You really don’t need any items for this spell, but you can use a candle of your favorite color and some incense to get you in the right mood. I love the color purple and also any type of incense. To feel very relaxed I used sandalwood or frankincense. Before working any spell, it is a good idea to purify yourself, your thoughts and your surroundings. I hope you have read about the two things you need to do before you work any spell. First is to find that inner sacred space where your thoughts are always inspiring and creative, and the second one is to find your outer sacerd space which is your altar where you will be physically working your spell. The inner sacred space is where you can go at any time. It does not depend on physical space, but only on the vastness of our mental vistas. After a nice, relaxing bath, sit down in your outer sacred space. Light the candle and the incense. Close your eyes and meditate on your blessings for some time. When you feel like your mind is calm, think of your family unit. Imagine all of you together in a room. Now imagine all of you laughing and chatting and enjoying each other’s company. Now magine a strong purple cocoon or egg shaped dome around your entire family, protecting you all from all negative energies. In your mind, you should see this protective shield around you ( since you are in this circle too!) and above you and below you, extending deep into the Earth. This sphere will protect and shield you from all outside influences that are meant to hurt you. Imagine this cocoon of safely that this shield provides and sit in its warmth for some time. Now imagine another shield surrounding this shield of protection. Let it be the shield that deflects all bad influences and negative energies away from you, in the direction of its own source. What evil is sent in your direction will return to the sender. Sit in the glow of this protective energy shield for as long as you can. Repeat this spell often. You may also do this at the beginning of every spell. This provides you will the positive environment that is most conducive to successful spell working!
