No beginners’ section will be complete without some mention of Voodoo dolls and a few Voodoo doll spells to try out. Voodoo dolls are used to focus the concentration and the power of the practitioner. The colors of the dolls and the colors of the pins (if used) help to reinforce the spell cast.

Attracting Success

If you need to attract success, you could either use a voodoo doll made of green material to represent luck, money or gambling; or a yellow doll to represent success. The voodoo doll should be prepared on an altar containing the four elements: air (incense); fire (candle); water; and earth (salt). It is advisable that the color of the candle corresponds to the color of the doll.

Then use the doll and the appropriate color pin. For attracting success, use a yellow pin and meditate upon how you want the success to be manifested. Then place the success pin in the heart or stomach region, indicating that success is your heart’s desire. The yellow pin could also be used in the head to indicate your desire to have the knowledge to be successful. As you can see, the different combinations of colors and locations on the voodoo doll can mean many different things. The important thing to remember is that you should not focus on hurting someone else in order to gain success because it is likely to because you harm in return.

Attracting Love

Make a Voodoo doll to represent Oshun, a Voodoo Goddess of Love. Dress Her in pinks, reds and whitesl.

As before, the doll will need to be assembled at the altar. Burn a pink candle and cinnamon incense. Ask Papa Legba to open the gates to the spirit world so that you can ask Oshun for a favor. To do so, recite the following three times:

“Odu Legba, Papa Legba, open the door, Your children are waiting. Papa Legba, open the door, your children await.”

You can now use your Voodoo doll as a focusing tool for creating the change you seek. Concentrate on the outcome you wish to achieve and greet Oshun with the appropriate ritual greeting: Ori Ye Ye O.

You may now ask Oshun for assistance in creating the change you seek to manifest. You may write a petition if you wish. Make an offering for three days following your request. Appropriate offerings include lighting a special candle, placing a small plate of food from your dinner on her altar, or flowers. Oshun is particularly fond of cinnamon, honey, oranges, pumpkins, gold, mirrors, and French pastries. Her favorite colors are yellow, green, and coral, her favorite day is Thursday, and her favorite number is the number 5. Be creative!

When you are finished, place Oshun in your kitchen or in the bedroom as these are the best places in the home for her.

Once you have tried a few of these spells, you will realize that Voodoo is a wonderfully creative type of magick, which is intriguing, easy to learn and as positive as you want it to be.
